The Paradigm Shift Assumptions underpinning NVC

These are the ideas that guide a practice of Nonviolent communication

  • That we can change narratives. That we can overturn legacies of Separation, Scarcity and Powerlessness and the model of debating right and wrong that permeates communication. That we can change what we give our attention to .. onto Feelings & Needs and choice.

  • All human beings are connected through having the same needs.
  • Feelings point to needs being met or unmet
  • All actions are attempts to meet needs
  • It’s possible and desirable to believe that everyone’s needs matter, to consider everyone’s needs,  and that win-win solutions are within our reach.

  • Human beings enjoy giving because of a need for contribution and to feel useful (and therefore like responding to requests)
  • Human beings change; they can grow, heal, and repair damage caused.
  • The most direct path to peace is self-connection.

  • Our world offers abundant resources for meeting needs
  • Interdependence is a fact of life, how can we consciously align ourselves with interdependence and make choices that take interdependence into consideration.

You might notice as you read them, that some are easier to embrace than others, some might feel ok in certain situations but a big no-no in others or with certain people. All of your responses to these principles are rich material for exploring the life that flows through you.
